Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra said Tuesday that he is a leading a recruitment effort to encourage the University of Connecticut School and Medicine and its dental school to move downtown. Both are in Farmington.
Segarra, who made the announcement to business and education leaders at Tuesday morning’s MetroHartford Alliance Rising Star breakfast at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, said recruiting the schools to Hartford would be a major economic boost and help create more collaborative ways to close health disparities in the city.
Segarra said he also is trying to get UConn to move it School of Social Work, currently in West Hartford, to downtown Hartford.
West Hartford’s St. Joseph College already has a pharmacy school campus downtown, as does Capital Community College.
The UConn School of Law also has its campus on Elizabeth Street.
Farmington economic development officials had no immediate comment.
