The state Department of Transportation, which plows more than 10,800 miles worth of road lanes in the winter months, said it will replace nearly 20 percent of its snow-and-ice vehicle fleet.
Some of the 114 trucks, which have an average age of 16 years, will be auctioned off, while others will be used for spare parts.
DOT said it has been purchasing tandem double-wing plows that can clear more than 24 feet of road in a single pass. Compared to plows purchased in the past, the acquisitions are saving $32,000 per unit, the agency said.
The trucks cost about $150,000 a piece, accoridng to WFSB.
The state will also buy two trucks dedicated to the CTfastrak busway.
The purchases will bring the total truck fleet to 634, with support as needed from 205 private contract plowers.
