Before the year is out, the Connecticut Department of Transportation will have all 405 new rail cars for the busiest commuter rail line in the country.
Metro-North, which operates the New Haven Line for DOT, has received 380 of the 405 rail cars ordered for the rail line, meant to increase reliability and passenger comfort.
The Kawasaki M-8 rail cars are replacing the entire New Haven Line fleet. The cars have redundant systems, and key electronics are placed inside the cars to protect against weather.
The new cars also feature brighter passenger space, high-back seating, outlets for every row, and bike racks.
The New Haven Line provided 39 million customer trips in 2013.
