Dominion $1.8M fine provides CT with wood stoves

A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency penalty against the owner of the largest power plant in New England has ended up providing more than 200 wood-burning heaters to Connecticut residents.

Dominion, which operates the nuclear Millstone Power Station in Waterford, provided $1.8 million in vouchers this year to help residents of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island replace inefficient wood-burning heaters to EPA-certified ones.

The payment was the result of a July 2013 settlement between EPA and Dominion over three power plants in Massachusetts, Illinois, and Indiana, which forced Dominion to meet stricter emission limits.

For the wood stove voucher programs, 201 Connecticut residents in New London and Windam counties received new stoves while another 421 went to Rhode Island residents and 259 went to Massachusetts residents. The American Lung Association of the Northeast administered the program for Dominion.
