A 45-year-old woman has pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $900,000 from her employer, a family-owned business in Naugatuck referred to by the Department of Justice as “Company A.”
Naugatuck resident Jennifer Cormier waived her right to be indicted and pleaded guilty on Friday in New Haven federal court in connection with the scheme, the DOJ said.
Cormier worked as a bookkeeper and performed office-related tasks for the business.
However, she was also working against the company’s interests, based on the allegations.
Between 2017 and 2023, Cormier created about 1,000 checks payable to herself, and to “cash,” then forged the signature of the business owner and deposited the checks into her personal account.
In an attempt to cover her tracks, she deleted the transactions from the company’s accounting system, according to the DOJ.
In total, Cormier embezzled $865,106, authorities said.
Cormier pleaded guilty to bank fraud and faces up to 30 years in prison when she is sentenced on Dec. 18. She has been released on a $50,000 bond.
This investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Naugatuck Police Department.
