Popular discount supermarket chain Aldi will open its much-anticipated new store in the former Toys ‘R’ Us space on Dixwell Avenue in Hamden next month, town officials said this week.
Aldi has planned a grand opening at the Hamden Mart location for 9 a.m. on April 12, said Hamden Economic Development Director Dale Kroop.
The chain is leasing 20,000 of the 36,000 square feet left empty five years ago when Toys ‘R’ Us relocated its Hamden store to North Haven, town officials have said. The store is expected to bring 50 jobs to Hamden.
Wine Merchant, a wine store already located in the plaza, will move into the remaining square footage next to Aldi by summer, officials said.
Aldi, known for offering a no-frills shopping experience, sells more than 90 percent of its grocery items under its own brand names in stores that typically have only four to five aisles.
Founded by the Albrecht family in Germany in 1961, the chain now has more than 1,600 U.S. stores across 35 states.
