New Haven’s City Plan Commission will consider a proposal to replace an affordable housing complex on George Street, increasing the number of units on the site.
Nonprofit developer NeighborWorks New Horizons proposes to demolish the existing, six-story, 55-unit apartment building at 730 George St., and construct an 81-unit building.
The current structure was built in 1972, and the developer says it has reached the end of its useful life and renovation is not feasible.
The existing apartments are all rented at affordable rates, housing residents who make between 25% and 60% of the area median income.
Neighborworks says the redeveloped building will maintain the same number of units for this population, but the additional apartments will be a mixture of affordable and market rate.
In December, the developers sought and received a variance before the Board of Zoning Appeals. The proposal will go before the City Plan Commission at its Feb. 25 meeting.
The project is planned to start in January 2027 with a projected completion in July 2028.
