Developer proposes 154-unit residential development near Stratford train station

A Shelton developer has proposed a 154-unit housing development near the Stratford train station, according to plans filed with the town.

Romano Brothers Builders LLC is seeking approval to construct a four-story, 134-unit apartment building and five two-story buildings with four units each on 4.16 acres at 952, 972 and 1000 E. Broadway St.

Romano Brothers Builders, controlled by Tyko Builders LLC and Shelton-based developer Mark Romano, did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

The town’s Zoning Commission is scheduled to discuss the proposal on Feb. 25.

The apartment building would include underground parking accessed from the rear of the property near the Board of Education building, according to the application. The development would provide 250 vehicle parking spaces and 35 bicycle spaces.

The project site is located within Stratford’s Transit-Oriented Development Overlay District.

The main apartment building, planned for the former Center School site, would feature brick on the first floor and horizontal cement siding on the upper floors. The smaller four-unit buildings along Sutton Avenue would be finished with cement siding and corner boards.

“The proposed development conforms to these TOD Overlay District provisions by providing moderate-density housing within walking distance to the Stratford Train Station,” the application said. “In addition, the proposed development will be consistent with existing surrounding context and provide reinvestment in an underutilized site, as envisioned in the TOD regulations.”
