Derby nursing home to close by June 10

A Derby nursing home will close by June 10 under an order issued last week by a federal bankruptcy judge.

Birmingham Health Center is being shuttered as a result of the bankruptcy of its owner, Spectrum Health Care LLC, according to court documents.

Just over 110 workers will lose their jobs, while approximately 100 residents will have to be moved to new facilities, Derby Economic Development Liaison Carmen DiCenso said.

“It’s very unfortunate not only for the workers, but also the clients, the Valley itself and the city of Derby,” DiCenso said. “I know (Derby) Mayor (Richard) Dzieken is trying to arrange a job fair for the workers to try to get them placed in other area facilities or find new jobs.”

The closing also potentially imposes a burden on the families of residents who may end up having to travel further to visit their loved ones, DiCenso said.

Birmingham is the second nursing home to close its doors in Derby in the last three years. DiCenso said it’s unclear at this point what will happen to the building at 210 Chatfield St.

The other shuttered nursing home, Marshal Lane Manor, is slated to become a dormitory for Chinese students attending area private high schools.

Another Naugatuck Valley nursing home, Hilltop Health Center in Ansonia, also closed in recent years.
