A local dental practice plans to open an office in the former West Center Marketplace building at 44 South Turnpike Road in Wallingford.
The 9,750-square-foot, one-story commercial building is located about half-a-mile north of the Oakdale Theatre. It previously was home to the market and Oakdale Cleaners, a dry-cleaning business, but both of those businesses closed during the pandemic.
The building, which sits on a 1.16-acre lot and has 40 parking spaces, was sold on Feb. 10 for $960,000 to Prospect Investment Group LLC, which has a principal address in Torrington. Doreen A. Gibbons and Kenneth M. Gelormino Jr., both of Torrington, are listed as owners of the LLC.
Neither Gibbons nor her attorney returned calls seeking comment.
The former cleaners’ location is now home to Cody’s Barber Shop.
The former market’s location has been converted to office space over the past few months and, according to a large banner hanging from the front of the building, it will be “the future home of Smilen Dental Group” this fall.
Smilen currently has an office at 60 Church St., in the Yalesville section of Wallingford. The group is led by Dr. Sulakshana “Sue” Sundaresan and Dr. Ming Deng, neither of whom responded to a request for comment.
Smilen Dental Group dates back to 2003, when it was founded as Meslin Pediatric Dentistry by Dr. Irwin Meslin. When Meslin retired in 2017, the practice was renamed Smilen Dental Group. Smilen is an anagram of Meslin.
