Defense contractor laying off 160 in B’port

A New Jersey military contractor says it will lay off 160 workers later this year at its Bridgeport plant as the United States winds down operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, The Associated Press reports.

Richard Goldberg, a spokesman for DRS Technologies in Parsippany, N.J., said Thursday that the affected workers are employed at its Bridgeport business, DRS Fermont. The company notified the state Department of Labor that layoffs will take place between September and November.

DRS Technologies makes generators, battery chargers and other power equipment.

Goldberg says the company had benefited from the military surges in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also said several stopgap budget measures approved by Congress have delayed or left in doubt some military contracts.
