It’s turtle nesting season and state wildlife officials want motorists to be on the lookout to avoid running them over.
“Helping a turtle move across the road can be the difference between life and death for the animal, and for future generations, but your safety comes first,” said Rick Jacobson, director of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Wildlife Division. “Be sure to assist a turtle in the road only when it is safe to do so and do not attempt to stop traffic.”
The gender split among aquatic turtles has become skewed because so many females get killed by vehicles, DEEP said.
The agency said that if you move a turtle, keep it pointed in the direction it was headed so it doesn’t attempt to cross the street again.
