DEEP recommends busway permit

The Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection preliminarily decided to grant permit approval to the New Britain to Hartford busway.

Although the final decision will be after Feb. 15, DEEP said the proposed busway does not violate the state’s Inland Wetlands and Watercourses Act and should be granted the necessary environmental permits for construction.

The state Department of Transportation has proposed a 9.4-mile-long roadway exclusively for buses to increase the use of public transportation between Hartford and New Britain and decrease congestion on Interstate 84. The plan will affect 2.1 acres of inland wetlands and 7,108 linear feet of watercourses.

Any arguments or support for DEEP’s ruling must be made with the department by Feb. 15, after which Commissioner Dan Esty will make a final determination.
