The Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection on Wednesday proposed a $2 million rehabilitation of the Housatonic River fish habitat and marshes.
The funding comes from a $9 million settlement with Fairfield conglomerate General Electric over environmentally detrimental releases from the GE facility in Pittsfield, Mass. impacting the Housatonic downstream.
The $2 million would fund seven projects aimed at increasing habitat for fish, including the river herring; removing of the Pinshop dam in Watertown; and the constructing a fish bypass at the Tingue dam in Seymour. The projects also include marsh revitalizations.
DEEP will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kent Town Hall to discuss the projects. The public has until March 11 to submit comment on the plans.
