Connecticut environmental regulators says restricting the size of motor vessels on Candlewood Lake will safeguard one of the state’s biggest water bodies.
The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection announced that, starting Wednesday, motorboats 26 feet or longer are banned from the lake, unless operators have a decal denoting DEEP’s authorization.
Owners of existing vessels fitting the size restriction that have historically operated on the lake, as well as new ones, must apply for authorization, DEEP Deputy Commissioner Susan Whalen said.
Noise and pollution concerns are reasons for the size limits, officials said.
Commercial and governmental boats are exempt, officials said.
Candlewood abuts New Milford and Brookfield, in Fairfield and Litchfield counties.
