The Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection will host a Sept. 18 forum to discuss the allocation of $15 million for a pilot program to develop microgrids in the state.
DEEP is meeting with developers and municipal and industry stakeholders to discuss the best way to test the workability of microgrids in the state, including what type of facilities the microgrids should support.
Microgrids provide electricity using a localized power generator, meant to supply a critical area in a city or town. If the main power grid ever goes down in a blackout, the microgrid can island its area off and continue to provide electricity.
The issue came to the forefront of Connecticut thinking after the 2011 widespread power outages. The state General Assembly allocated $15 million for a pilot program into the concept, particular for critical facilities such as fire and police stations and emergency operations centers.
