Connecticut’s coastal boat-sewage facilities will vie for a slice of the $1 million in federal funds available for new installations and upgrades to keep Long Island Sound pollution free this season, authorities say.
The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) said Thursday grant applications are being accepted through July 30 for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Clean Vessel Act Program.
Connecticut’s $1 million grant is the largest the federal fish and wildlife agency has awarded this year, DEEP said.
Grant proceeds are earmarked to reimburse operators up to 75 percent of their costs to either install and operate new marine sewage disposal facilities or repair or upgrade existing facilities, the state agency said. Also covered are pumpout boats and central vacuum pumpout systems which are incorporated within the marina or boatyard dock system.
Proposals must be received by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, and should be submitted to DEEP, Office of Long Island Sound Programs, 79 Elm Street, Hartford, CT 06106-5127.
