DECD deputy to jump to OPM

Kip Bergstrom, deputy commissioner of the Department of Economic & Community Development, will soon depart the position he has held since 2011 in favor of a position at the Office of Policy Management, officials confirmed.

Bergstrom’s duties at OPM will involve determining a viable future for the Amistad, a replica of the historic schooner built by Mystic Seaport and that has received state funding.

Amistad America, the nonprofit that has operated the educational ship, owed $2 million in back taxes and wages as of November.

Bergstrom was appointed executive director of the Commission on Culture and Tourism in 2011, but that entity was soon merged into DECD, where he became deputy commissioner.
