DCP: Bars to close at 3 a.m. Thursday

Bars and restaurants can serve alcohol later than normal on New Year’s Day, though package stores and grocery stores cannot sell on the holiday, the Department of Consumer Protection said.

New Year’s Day is the one day of the year Connecticut bars can close at 3 a.m. — an hour later than usual — unless local ordinances say otherwise. Drink service can resume at 9 a.m. on Thursday.

Stores must stop selling alcohol at the usual 9 p.m. on Wednesday.

DCP Commissioner William Rubenstein, who will retire in January after three years heading the department, urged drinkers to behave responsibly.

“Let’s keep this holiday safe and free of needless tragedy caused by the irresponsible use of alcohol,” Rubenstein said.
