Danbury renewable power supplier FuelCell Energy Inc. has sold a powerplant to Sonoma County, Calif., to light and heat the municipality’s jail and office buildings.
The 1.4 megawatt Direct FuelCell powerplant will replace about half the natural gas the county uses for heating, cleaning and cooking, FuelCell said today. The power unit will begin service in 2010.
In addition, the unit will serve as an efficient, low-emissions alternative to electricity supplied by California’s typical power grid, the company said.
The sale price wasn’t disclosed, but FuelCell said the purchase was partly funded by a $3 million grant from California’s energy incentive program administered by utility Pacific Gas & Electric Co.
