Danbury-based FuelCell Energy Inc. has signed a letter of intent with a London-based investment firm to explore deploying up to 450 megawatts of fuel cell power systems for data centers and other distributed power applications, the companies announced Tuesday.
The collaboration between FuelCell and Sustainable Development Capital LLP targets the growing demand for on-site power generation driven by artificial intelligence and high-performance computing data centers, which require reliable electricity to support intensive workloads, the announcement states.
The partnership would combine FuelCell Energy’s distributed baseload power technology with SDCL’s experience financing and operating energy infrastructure projects. SDCL, established in 2007, manages roughly $2.5 billion in assets.
FuelCell said its systems can generate continuous, megawatt-scale direct current power on-site and operate independently of the electricity grid during normal operation, subject to reliable fuel supply.
The letter of intent is a preliminary agreement rather than a binding commitment. The companies did not disclose financial terms, timelines or specific project locations.
