Danbury semiconductor-equipment maker ATMI Inc. has been named one of the U.S. Small business Administration’s 100 success stories for creating at least 100 jobs since getting SBA assistance.
Publicly traded ATMI was started by five scientists in 1986. Part of their funding came from the SBA’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, officials said.
Today, it employs nearly 800 throughout the U.S., Asia and Europe. Annual revenues exceed $350 million and its stock market capitalization approaches $600 million, SBA said.
Without SBIR, “ATMI would barely have existed, and would not have been able to become the public company it is today,” says ATMI founder Gene Banucci.
