A Danbury roofing contractor has pleaded guilty to filing false federal tax returns, admitting he underreported more than $1.3 million in gross receipts over five years.
Mark Edwards, 61, owner of Mark Edwards Roofing and Siding LLC, entered his plea Wednesday before U.S. District Judge Sarah F. Russell in New Haven, waiving his right to indictment.
Federal prosecutors said Edwards provided his tax preparer with handwritten income and expense figures that significantly understated his business revenue on his 2019 through 2023 returns, resulting in a tax loss to the IRS of $368,334.
Edwards has owned and operated the Danbury-based roofing and construction company since 1998, according to authorities. Starting around 2018, he failed to maintain accurate records or perform proper bookkeeping for the business, prosecutors said.
He pleaded guilty to a single count of aiding in the preparation of a false tax return, which carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison. Edwards was released on a $50,000 bond pending sentencing, which has not yet been scheduled.
