Danbury Hospital has opened a new 19,000 square-foot neonatal intensive care unit on its campus.
The $8 million facility includes private rooms for newborns as well as amenities for parents who stay overnight with their babies.
The facility nearly quadruples the size of the former unit and includes individual patient rooms that can accommodate 19 newborns, including rooms designed for twins and triplets to keep the family together.
Danbury Hospital said it treats critically ill infants and premature babies born as early as 23 weeks. The NICU admits close to 400 patients a year, including about 11 percent percent of all babies born at Danbury Hospital, plus newborns transferred from New Milford Hospital and other centers.
