Danbury-based biopharmaceutical company MannKind Corp. has been growing its workforce and investing in its Connecticut manufacturing operations as it prepares to launch new products and expand production at its Danbury facility.
The company said in its second-quarter earnings report that it expanded its commercial organization to support recently approved products, a move that nearly doubled selling, general and administrative expenses from a year earlier.
In response to questions from the Hartford Business Journal, Corporate Affairs Director Christie Iacangelo said the company hired sales, key-account and customer-support employees nationwide, including in Connecticut, to support the launches of pediatric Afrezza and Furoscix ReadyFlow.
Afrezza, the company's inhaled insulin, received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval in May for use in children with diabetes after previously being approved only for adults. Furoscix ReadyFlow, a new treatment for adults with heart failure or chronic kidney disease, recently received FDA approval and is expected to launch by the end of August.
Iacangelo said MannKind is also recruiting for manufacturing, quality, engineering and other positions at its Danbury facility. The company invested a portion of its first-half capital spending in manufacturing equipment, infrastructure and other upgrades at the plant to support current production and future products.
The Danbury facility manufactures Afrezza and serves as the sole manufacturing site for Tyvaso DPI, an inhaled treatment for certain lung diseases that is marketed by United Therapeutics. The Danbury plant also supports research and development for future therapies, Iacangelo said.
For the second quarter, MannKind reported revenue of $109.4 million, up 43% from a year earlier. The company posted a net loss of $19 million, compared with net income of $668,000 in the year-ago quarter, as it increased spending to support new product launches and expand its commercial operations.
As of Dec. 31, 2025, MannKind reported 592 total employees, including 254 engaged in manufacturing, 46 in research and development and 292 in selling, general and administrative roles.
