Cynthia Ryan named Cigna’s new chief human resources officer

Longtime Cigna Corp. employee Cynthia Ryan has been tapped as the Bloomfield-based health insurer’s next chief human resources officer, the company announced Friday morning.

Ryan, who has held several HR roles at Cigna over the past 23 years, will replace John Murabito, who had served in the post for nearly 19 years. Murabito, who also served as Cigna’s chief administrative officer, will retire effective April 1, the company said.

He joined the company in 2003 and led Cigna’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, charitable giving and the Cigna Foundation, the company said.

While there will be a changing of the guard at the top HR post for the first time in nearly two decades, Cigna’s chairman and CEO David Cordani said Ryan has the skill set  and experience to allow for a smooth transition.

“I’ve known Cindy for more than 20 years and I am confident that she will build on the legacy of excellence that John created,” Cordani said in a statement. “Particularly as the talent landscape is shifting significantly, Cindy’s expertise will enable us to attract and retain the talent necessary to deliver on our company’s purpose and growth strategy.”

Ryan, who most recently served as senior vice president and human resources officer for Cigna’s U.S. businesses, recently spoke with the Hartford Business Journal about the future of work and how the pandemic has changed the way the health insurer conducts business, including how it recruits employees and the technology it’s adopted to keep workers engaged, no matter where they are located.
