CVS will close Aetna’s Midwest facility, lay off 74

CVS Caremark is closing an Aetna IInc. facility in Kansas City, Mo., that fills mail-order prescriptions. The move affects 74 employees, The Kansas City Business Journal reports.

According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act filing in Missouri, the employees will be laid off this year, the paper reports on its Web site.

John Fougere, director of communications for the Missouri Department of Economic Development, said the filing indicated that all employees would leave the facility by the end of the year.

In July 2010, Hartford health insurer Aetna and CVS Caremark entered into a 12-year contract for CVS Caremark to provide Pharmacy Benefit Management services to Aetna.

CVS Caremark reported an 18.4 percent increase in first-quarter pharmacy services revenue to $14 billion, an improvement the company attributed mostly to the Aetna deal.

According to an email from Christine Cramer, director of public relations for CVS Caremark, the company has been working to make its operations more efficient and move all mail-order fulfillment to CVS Caremark pharmacies.
