CTTransit receives $5.7M for New Haven fuel cell

State public transportation provider CTTransit announced Wednesday it will install a UTC Power fuel cell at its New Haven bus facility with the help of a $5.7 million federal grant.

The Federal Transit Administration previously had supplied a $5.2 million grant to install another fuel cell from South Windsor manufacturer UTC Power at the CTTransit facility in Hartford. That fuel cell was installed in August and provides 400 kilowatts of power to the Hartford facility.

The New Haven fuel cell also will provide 400 kilowatts of electricity while capturing the waste heat generated in the electrochemical process to heat the CTTransit facility.

CTTransit also operates three zero-emission hydrogen buses powered by UTC Power fuel cells.
