CT’s veterans-aid event set for 9/9

More than 1,000 homeless and needy veterans are expected to show up Sept. 9 for the 16th annual “Stand Down 2011” that offers them free job, health screening and housing services and assistance.

The Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs in Rocky Hill is hosting the event at the State Veterans Home Campus, 287 West Street, Rocky Hill, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Last year a record 1,300 needy veterans participated, the agency said.

Supporting state agencies include the Connecticut Department of Banking, Labor, Higher Education, Mental Health and Addiction Services, Motor Vehicles, Public Health, Social Services and Transportation; the Office of the Chief Public Defender; and the Judicial Branch.

Participating federal agencies include the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, U.S. Department of Labor and U.S. Social Security Administration.

Free transportation for veterans will be available.

Needy veterans or their advocates can pre-register and receive more information by calling 860-616-3801 or by visiting www.ct.gov/ctva. However, preregistration is not required to attend.
