The Day Publishing Co. has cut 38 workers as a result of moving the printing of its flagship newspaper to Rhode Island and a slackening of first-quarter revenue, The Bulletin in Norwich reports.
Most of the layoffs occurred in the printing division of the New London-based business, publisher of The Day, Eastern Connecticut’s largest newspaper.
A couple of other divisions were impacted including the news department, where two employees were let go, Editor and Publisher Gary Farrugia said Wednesday.
Following the cuts, the company’s workforce totals about 280, he said. The printing division had 151 workers prior to the layoffs. Other workers have had hours reduced and furloughs have also been used.Â
The Day began to be printed March 28 by The Providence Journal, Rhode Island’s largest newspaper.Â
