Snow-weary Nutmeggers may find this one hard to believe, but a Stamford energy company says all that icy powder on rooftops throughout Connecticut may actually help cut their heating bills.
The fifth major storm of the season blanketed the Northeast this week, setting snowfall records and shutting down schools and stranding motorists.
What MX Energy describes is akin to the insulating effect that Inuits and other cold-climate natives rely on from igloos and temporary storm shelters built from snow and ice.
“The snow on the rooftops and around the sides of the house can serve as protection from the elements, insulating the home and actually making it temporarily more efficient,” says Blas Pina, natural gas director for MX Energy.
Of course, too much snow on rooftops poses the threat of a collapse.
More snowy insulation may be on the way: Forecasters are calling for another storm to hit the Northeast next week.
