CT’s Silgan paying $250M for plastic food-packaging unit

Stamford’s Silgan Holdings Inc. is paying about $250 million for British consumer-packaging giant Rexam PLC’s plastic food-packaging business.

Silgan generates about $3.5 billion a year in sales of metal food cans and plastic containers for the health and beauty market.

Rexam does about $210 million a year selling plastic bowls and barrier trays to the packaged-food and ready-meal market.

The deal is due to close in the third quarter.
