Connecticut gained 11,500 jobs in September, pushing the state’s jobless rate down to 6.4 percent – the lowest in six years, the labor authorities say.
So far this year, the state has added a net 26,100 jobs, the state Department of Labor said Monday.
The state’s unemployment rate was 6.6 percent in August, but that reflected a loss of jobs that month that the state Labor Department said has since been revised to show a much smaller job loss. In September a year ago, Connecticut’s jobless rate stood at 7.7 percent.
“September employment numbers are very encouraging with strong gains in estimated payroll employment,’’ agency research director Andy Condon said in a statement. “Some of this gain was expected, especially in local public education and leisure & hospitality where seasonal shifts may have been missed in August.’’
“Today’s jobs report is another sign that we are making steady progress in improving our state’s economy,’’ Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said. “With the addition of these jobs, we’ve added nearly 70,000 private sector jobs since January of 2011. That’s one of the best periods for private sector job growth since the 1990s.’’
