In a further sign of the crippling impact on Connecticut from the financial crisis and sagging economy, statewide permits for new housing fell to 386 in September, bringing the year-to-date total of housing starts to 3,770 units, state data showed today.
In September a year earlier, 463 permits were issued for a year-to-date 2007 total of 5,237 housing starts, according to the state Department of Economic and Community Development.
Most cities and towns reported declines in the number of housing permits issued last month. Some of the biggest percentage declines were posted in Hartford, Manchester, Vernon, Bridgeport and Greenwich, DECD data showed.
