Stamford document and data processer Pitney Bowes is partnering with the Stamford Innovation Center to host an entrepreneurial competition based on the utilization of their technologies and platforms.
“We would love to see an ecosystem of products and services built up around the products and services we offer already. We think there are ways to take advantage of our existing technologies that are beyond what we have imagined so far, and that can create real value in the marketplace,” said Arthur Parkos, vice president of Pitney’s Strategic Technology and Innovation Center.
The basis of the competition is the application of three areas of Pitney technology: location intelligence, employing geospatial platforms such as Spectrum Spatial and MapInfo Professional; security evidencing, using programs like Cryptographic Accounting Module to provide privacy and security in online transactions; and incorporating Connect +, a Web-based digital envelope and mailing system.
The competition is aimed towards startups and entrepreneurial companies that want to expand and build new businesses using Pitney’s technologies.
Overall, submissions will be judged on business potential, solidity, the role that Pitney technology plays in the business’ success, and the usage of the three challenge areas.
Winners will receive one year of free office space and Internet access in Pitney headquarters in Stamford, access to the company’s platforms, technical and business assistance, and mentoring from the Stamford Innovation Center.
The company expects participants from Connecticut, New York and California, based on Web visits since the competition was announced on July 23. Pitney will hold an informational session for prospective participants on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at the Stamford Innovation Center, providing overviews of the three key platforms and an opportunity to meet with Pitney executives.
Parkos said the concept for the competition came from Pitney’s interest in supporting and stimulating economic growth in Connecticut.
“The best thing that will come out of this competition are new business opportunities for Connecticut entrepreneurs and new value for our customers,” said Parkos.
The entry deadline is Sept. 7. Finalists will present their business models in October, and winners will be announced in late October or early November.
