Connecticut is offering chances at a lottery of a different kind — one in which the lucky few will literally put a match to their winnings.
The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) announced Friday that applications for its annual state forest firewood lottery are now available.
Applications will be accepted until Feb. 1, with lottery results determined by March 14, the agency says.
Standing trees and downed wood will be sold to the lottery winners in designated two-cord lots for $60 by DEEP foresters as forest road conditions allow. A stacked cord of wood is roughly four feet wide, by four feet high and eight feet long.
Most all permits — you can’t legally emove state forest firewood without one — will be issued before October. Oh, and bring your own chainsaw.
Applications may be downloaded and more information may be found at the DEEP Forestry‘s Web site: DEEP: State Lands Firewood Program or by calling 860-424-3630.
