CT’s new home starts take July dip

Connecticut’s new-housing starts slowed appreciably in July but the pace of housing construction remains ahead of a year earlier, the state says.

Permits issued in 128 cities and towns last month were 327, down from 420 in July 2013, and less than half the 777 permits granted in June, the state Department of Economic and Community Development said Wednesday.

Still, permits totaled 2,817 through the first six months of this year, up 22 percent from 2,307 issued through the first half of 2013, DECD data show.

Although single-family dwellings continue to pace the state’s residential construction market, permits for buildings with three to four living units rose 123.5 percent, to 76 last month, the DECD survey said.

In 2013, 4,027 permits were issued vs. 4,140 in 2012, the agency said.
