Connecticut congressman John E. Larson says he will introduce Wednesday his federal bill aimed at boosting production and sales of vehicles powered by natural gas.
The New Alternative Transportation to Give American Solutions, or NAT GAS Act, provides tax credits and regulatory changes for manufacturers to produce more vehicles powered by either liquefied natural gas or compress natural gas.
Larson, D-1st District, said natural gas is cheaper, more plentiful than oil and readily available from domestic sources. Switching away from gasoline-powered cars gives the country relief from volatile oil prices.
The NAT GAS Act has bipartisan support in the House of Representatives, including from Republican Congressmen John Sullivan of Oklahoma and Kevin Brady of Texas.
President Barack Obama supports the bill, as well. The legislation had broad bipartisan support last year, but it failed to be called for a vote on the House floor.
