Permits to build new housing statewide fell sharply in January 2016 from a year earlier, state data shows.
There were 145 permits issued by 120 cities and towns the U.S. Census surveyed for its monthly sample, the state Department of Economic and Community Development said Thursday.
A year ago, 255 permits were issued in those communities.
A break down of the latest permit tally shows single-family dwellings dominated, with 100 permits issued and the rest for multi-family buildings with five living units or more, according to DECD.
