CT’s home seizures counter U.S. trend

Connecticut home foreclosures were among the nation’s highest in the first half of this year, counter to a general decline nationally, a fresh Realty Trac survey shows.

The housing-data publisher’s report released Thursday shows Connecticut foreclosures posted the second highest year-over-year growth in the nation – behind Massachusetts — for the first six months of 2016. Nationwide, foreclosures were down compared to the same period.

Connecticut foreclosures have risen 40 percent so far this year vs. the comparable six-month period a year ago.

Connecticut also led all states in the number of houses landing in foreclosure in the first half of this year, with a 91 percent increase from the first half of 2015, Realty Trac said. Massachusetts, by comparison, was a distant second, with a 35 percent jump in foreclosure starts from January through June of this year.

Nationwide, 94,469 properties were in foreclosure in June, down 6 percent from May and 19 percent lower than in June 2015, Realty Trac said. Overall, U.S. foreclosures last month were the lowest since July 2006.

A total of 253,408 U.S. properties started the foreclosure process in the first half of 2016, down 17 percent from a year ago the lowest level for any half-year period since RealtyTrac began tracking foreclosure starts in 2006, the publisher said.
