CT’s FuelCell to run Swiss utility’s fuel cell

Danbury’s FuelCell Energy Inc. agreed to run the stationary fuel-cell power plant for a Swiss electric utility, a pact that calls for FuelCell to eventually replace that unit with one of its own sometime during the 10-year term.

FuelCell Energy’s German unit, FuelCell Energy Solutions GmbH, didn’t disclose Tuesday terms of its pact with Elektrizitaetswerke Zurich (EWZ), which includes FuelCell supervising the two-year-old plant from an around-the-clock control center to be set up somewhere in Europe.

A fuel cell works by harnessing chemical energy into electricity.

EWZ is one of Switzerland’s biggest power companies, supplying electricity to the city of Zurich and parts of the canton Graubunden for 121 years.

It describes itself as an eco-friendly utility that also relies on wind farms to generate power.
