CT’s business-levy filings go digital Jan. 1

Connecticut’s tax collector is throwing the digital switch New Year’s Day on a paperless system to speed filing and collection of most state business levies.

The state Department of Revenue Services (DRS) said Tuesday it is notifying business taxpayers that the state is moving to more tax filing and payment electronically in the New Year.

“The business community has been asking for years that Connecticut move more quickly to electronic tax filing,’’ DRS Commissioner Kevin B. Sullivan said.

For tax periods that start on Jan. 1, 2014, the following taxes must be filed and paid electronically:

Filings and collections for the state’s other three dozen or so commercial taxes remain in their current format, agency said.

For small taxpayers who may not have access to a computer, sales and withholding taxes may be filed on line or by phone, the agency said. DRS walk-in offices in Bridgeport, Hartford, and Waterbury also have kiosks where taxpayers can electronically file and pay taxes.
