CT warns of unlicensed debt collectors

Two California debt collectors soliciting Connecticut borrowers are unlicensed in this state and aren’t affiliated with Waterbury’s Webster Bank, the state attorney general says.

Attorney General George Jepsen is warning consumers that Novation Marketing Center and Novation Law Center are offering Connecticut mortgage borrowers loans modifications, suggesting a tie to Webster.

Jepsen says he has sent a letter to the Newport Beach, Calif., companies demanding, among other things, they cease and desist from doing business in Connecticut until they are licensed.

The state Department of Banking oversees debt negotiation laws.

Webster Bank advised its customers who receive a mortgage workout letter from any company that claims to represent Webster, to contact Webster at 203-741-4877.
