CT Veterans’ Home gets $6M for upgrade

The federal Veteran Affairs agency is putting nearly $6 million toward renovating residential living areas at the state Veterans Home in Rocky Hill, authorities said Tuesday.

Congressman John B. Larson, (D.-1st District) and Gov. M. Jodi Rell announced separately that the secretary of Veterans Affairs has given final approval to fund the $9.2 million in renovations at the 340-bed facility that is sanctuary for homeless and needy Connecticut veterans.

The state recently bonded about $2.5 million to cover its third of the project cost.

“We have worked hard to make our Veterans’ Home a comfortable, secure and dignified place to live, so this is tremendous news,” Rell said. “We are bringing our state Veterans Home into the 21st Century.”

Connecticut’s Department of Public Works will oversee the renovation expected to begin in late May and be completed in the fall of 2011.
