CT, utilities outline cybersecurity plan

Connecticut’s regulators and utilities on Monday released their cybersecurity plan to strengthen the state’s energy infrastructure from hackers and terrorists.

The plan, which still needs to be fleshed out, includes conducting regular self-audits of the energy infrastructure like gas pipelines and the electric grid, moving toward third-party audits, protecting confidential information, and coordination with emergency management officials.

Connecticut is the first state to devise a cybersecurity strategy with its utilities and will share it with other states to help them come up with similar plans, according to the governor.

The need for a cybersecurity plan first arose with the state’s Comprehensive Energy Strategy in February 2013, and a study from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission released this year also detailed the need for protecting the electric grid and gas pipelines.
