Fairfield University announced that President Mark R. Nemec’s contract has been extended by 10 years, keeping him at the helm of the private university through June 2036.
The university’s board of trustees said the unusually long extension is intended to provide leadership continuity as the school continues to expand.
Nemec has served as Fairfield University's president since 2017. During his tenure, traditional undergraduate enrollment has grown nearly 32%, from 4,003 students to 5,276, while total enrollment has increased nearly 38%, from 5,197 to 7,161, according to the university.
The school has also undertaken a series of campus investments during Nemec’s tenure, including construction of the Charles F. Dolan School of Business and Leo D. Mahoney Arena, along with new residence halls. Current projects include Corrigan Hall, additional graduate housing and an outdoor dining pavilion.
Fairfield received a record 21,662 applications for its class of 2030, the school said. The university has also expanded beyond its main campus, including through Fairfield Bellarmine, a two-year associate degree program in Bridgeport, and academic programs in Texas and China.
