Connecticut’s pace of job losses slowed in August, but not enough to keep the state unemployment rate from rising to 8.1 percent, the state Labor Department said.
The July jobless rate was 7.8 percent.
The labor department said the state lost 70,800 jobs on a seasonally adjusted basis from August 2008 until last month.
“As is happening nationally,” said state labor economist Salvatore DiPillo, “our overall job losses have decelerated in recent months, which is hopefully an indication that the worst of the job loss is behind us and the country will begin to see some true job growth in the upcoming year.”
Six of the 10 major industry sectors and gained in one – education and health services — while employment remained stable in the other three.
