CT transportation board looks at toll issue

A Connecticut transportation planning group is considering whether to endorse the resurrection of tolls on some Connecticut highways.

The state’s Transportation Strategy Board is set to review a consultant’s report today and determine what it wants to recommend to the General Assembly and Gov. M. Jodi Rell.

The report includes options such as creating toll lanes parallel to highways that would let drivers avoid congestion; charging drivers based on how many miles they travel; and placing electronic tolls at state borders.

Supporters say tolls could bring in millions of dollars yearly, while opponents say local roads would be clogged and state drivers would resent the extra charges.
