CT to weigh bonding $22.4M for road work

Several Connecticut road-repair projects valued at $22.4 million are drawing attention from the governor’s office for possible bond funding as a means to add or retain nearly 1,200 construction jobs.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said Monday the state Bond Commission, which he chairs, meets Thursday to consider those and other projects.

State transportation officials are expected ask the commission to bond $18.9 million for highway paving and safety improvements along Interstates 84 and 91, plus six state routes in Canaan, Killingly, Mansfield, Simsbury, Woodbury, and Wethersfield. These projects are expected to create or retain 802 construction-related jobs.

Additionally, the commission will consider $3.5 million for Fix-it-First road maintenance projects that are currently underway and were initially funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. This funding will create or retain 375  jobs, Malloy said.

“We have an opportunity to create jobs now and do these projects at lower costs than if we shelve them for another five years and watch project and labor costs rise,” he said.
