CT to start truck-safety checks Tuesday

State motor-vehicle inspectors will begin a three-day field check of road-going trucks and commercial buses as part of a North American safety sweep, authorities say.

Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Melody A. Currey said the enforcement and education blitz is part of Roadcheck 2011, an international activity that will take place June 7-9 throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico

DMV inspectors and state troopers will man safety checkpoints statewide along Interstates 84, 95, 91, 84, 395 and 384. They also will conduct roving road checks.

Enforcement officers will also be using weigh stations as well as the state’s two casinos to undertake their inspection and enforcement actions.

“We want truck and bus company operators, and the drivers of their vehicles, to know that safety is a top priority in Connecticut,” Currey said in a statement Monday.

Vehicles failing in major categories of the checklist will be placed out of service, she said. This means that the vehicle must either be towed from the inspection site or fixed there before it legally can be driven again.
